Another Playground Build – 2014

On Saturday, July 12, 2014, the North Surrey Lions were involved in building a playground at Hjorth Road Elementary School. The Playground was organized by KaBOOM! (who we worked with in 2013) and again sponsored by Foresters. The community partner was Surrey Schools. Hjorth Road PAC, Surrey Rotary and North Surrey Lions rounded out the planning committee.

Over 250 volunteers helped with the event and special acknowledgement goes to those companies that sponsored the Lions Food Services including Prospera Credit Union, Superstore, Costco, McDonalds, Starbucks, IGA, City of Surrey, Papa John’s and Newton High Quality Meats. A special thanks goes to North Surrey Lions Club member and MP for Surrey North, Jasbir Sandhu, who not only supplied the lunch but the volunteers who helped served it.

Lions World Lunch Relay Event on April 4th.

North Surrey Lions Club Invites Community to Attend Lions World Lunch Relay Event on April 4th.

The North Surrey Lions Club is inviting members of the community to join them on April 4th for a special international event. The Lions World Lunch Relay brings families and friends of Lions together in their local communities with families and friends of Lions around the world to share a meal and celebrate the value of service.

The North Surrey Lions Club would like to invite the community to join them for lunch at Bozzini’s Restaurant on 104 Avenue on Friday, April 4 at noon. This event will also be a fundraiser for the Surrey Food Bank.

“We hope people working or shopping in the area will stop and have lunch with the Lions and bring a non-perishable item or cash donation for the food bank,” said Bonnie Burnside, Club President. “The North Surrey Lions have been a long-time supporter of Surrey Food Bank, particularly the Tiny Bundles Program.”

The Lions World Lunch Relay is a great opportunity for the community to learn more about the North Surrey Lions Club, its work and opportunities to get involved. “We want to share the great things we’re doing in the community, and let others know how they can help,” Burnside said.

The Lions World Lunch Relay will kick off on April 4th at noon in New Zealand. As Lions clubs around the world host lunch events at noon in different international time zones, the Lunch Relay will move from time zone to time zone around the world, forming the Lions World Lunch Relay.

To learn more about the lunch event, the North Surrey Lions Club or its service projects, visit their website at www.northsurreylionsclub.com. The North Surrey Lions Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Kalmar Restaurant at 7pm.

Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world. Its 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs are serving communities in 208 countries and geographical areas around the globe. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects. We need Your Help!

Kaboom, a non-profit organization, is partnering with Foresters Co-op, the City of Surrey and the North Surrey Lions Club to create a brand new playground at Whalley
Athletic Park. This truly collaborative effort will build an entire playground in a single day . Up to 150 Community members are invited to become vital volunteers on Saturday, July 13th between 8am and 2:30pm.

There are lots of volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and interests. Opportunities for people of all ages include the Unpacking & Assembly Team, Food Service
and Green Teams.
If you are over 19 years of age there are a number of teams to participate in including: Builders (and leaders), Operations, Registration, Safety & Security Team and Youth
Activity.

In addition, adult volunteers are needed to help prepare the site and supplies on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 from 8am-3pm (Friday Prep Day is only necessary if
everything is not done on Thursday). There will also be supervised activities for children to
participate in on the Saturday Build Day so that parents can volunteer with piece of mind. Food, water bottles, and refreshments will be provided to volunteers on both prep
and build days. The official start of the program takes place on Saturday, July 13 at 8:30am and the offcial opening of the Playground will take place on Thursday, July 18 marking the community’s success in building a playground together.
